It's a new year with new goals, which means a new you wants to start hitting the gym to reach your 2022 health goals. And if the thought of going to the gym makes you anxious, you are not the only one. So here are five tips that helped me get over my gym anxiety, and just might help you too.
1. Look Good, Feel Good
Investing in workout wear that makes you feel cute, comfortable, and confident makes a world of difference in the gym. This could be name brand, like Nike or GymShark, or it could just be some less expensive pieces from Amazon. You know what they say... "Dress for success!"
2. Have a Plan
Knowing what you are going to be doing once you get to the gym will help you immensely. This can be by following a pre-designed program or routine, or something you design yourself. There are tons of free routines posted on YouTube. Some of my favorite "fit-fluencers" that I would follow when I first started going include Whitney Simmons, Krissy Cela, and Nikki Blackketter. Or you can pay for a specific plan. Currently, I am doing NaturallyStefanie's Vegan Aesthetics workout plan for the new year. It's a subscription based service with workout programs for gym beginners (consisting of 3 days a week) and more advanced gym goers (consisting of 6 days a week). There is also a home workout guide if you decide to give up on the gym, but not on your fitness goals.

3. Know When to Go
There are certain times during the day that have more people in the gym than others. For instance, that time when most people are just getting off work (5pm or 6pm ish) is usually a busy period for most gyms. Some gyms track this for you so you can know before you go, but if your gym does not, check out this chart below to see common busy times.
4. Bring a Friend
Sometimes just having someone you know also at the gym can be a comfort to you. For instance, when I first started going to the gym, I would go with my husband. We wouldn't work out together, but just knowing he was there made me feel more comfortable. If a gym buddy is not enough for you, make them your workout partner. Do your exercises together, watch each other's forms, and get into shape together.

5. Remember That Everyone Began as a Beginner
In today's society, it almost feels expected to be wonderful at something the very first time you try it. This is not the case. You do not have to be good at your hobbies to enjoy them. And those that are great, started where you are at one point too. Do not compare yourself to someone who has been putting in effort for years, while you are only on your chapter one. A quote I recently heard that resonated a lot with me is, "You do not have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great."
